Thousands Flock To Stonehenge To Celebrate Summer Solstice, Trash It

06.22.2009 - Stonehenge left littered with rubbish after 36,500 revellers descend on ancient site for summer solstice

A crowd of 36,500 people gathered in Stonehenge to celebrate the dawn of summer solstice this weekend. The self-proclaimed earth lovers welcomed the longest day of the Northern Hemisphere with dancing, singing, and—since this is England—lots and lots of booze and narcotics. Though police made several arrests, the crowd happily partied on.

The BBC caught up with Druid King Arthur Pendragon to talk about the celebration:

Apparently, that wonderful feeling in the morning that Mr. Pendragon mentions comes from leaving Stonehenge looking like a frat house after a raging graduation party. Tons of plastic bags, alcohol bottles, and other miscellaneous rubbish were left laying around long after everyone had cleared out.

Trashing Stonehenge...who cares, right Britons? Some poor chap from a third-world country will be glad to pick up after you. After all, he gets paid a few pents to do so, and he needs that money to feed his ten children and pregnant wife. You wouldn't want to take that away from him, would you? That's why you left all your garbage behind, not because you're all a bunch of hypocritical "earth lovers" lacking any semblance of accountability or self-sufficiency.
