The Evil Empire

03.14.2007 - Telegraph.co.uk

I keep getting e-mails from a PR promoting a book called, The Evil Empire: 101 Ways That England Ruined the World by Steven Grasse.

This morning the email said: “In a March 10th article that spans an entire page of America's most prestigious newspaper, The New York Times, there is a piece about the mystery depression of Britain's young people. The article says that they spend all of their time drinking, drugging and doing petty crimes. May we say that we know what is illing these young adults...GUILT!"

"They feel guilty about being the wayward sons of such an evil empire that has spread so much destruction over the past half-millennium around the globe. Only reparations will release these youngsters and allow them to live productive lives.
So, Britain, we urge you, do what is right and pay the reparations bill.”

The Evil Empire book website says that the Brits invented slums, child labour, put Saddam Hussein in power, burned Joan of Arc at the stake, and enslaved the globe to get their tea fix.

In addition we think Kings and Queen are better than the rest of the globe’s population ( the author obviously didn’t see, or read about, the Channel 4 documentary about Prince Charles, the Meddling Prince).

We also got 14 million people in China hooked on opium and if this isn’t enough we “took the soul out of rock and roll”.

The book comes out on the 23rd of April, and I’m fascinated to read the whole thing. That’s if I haven’t thrown my British passport in the Hudson River by then, and pledged allegiance to the Star Spangled Banner (not bloody likely).

The author’s publicist posts a link to The International Coalition for British Reparations.

“We are a global network of citizens who have suffered injuries at the hands of the British Empire over the last five hundred years. We've banded together to ask the United Kingdom to compensate the world for all the damage they've done,” it says.
